Welcome to Episode 15 of Run This World with Frank Shorter. Frank is a true legend; a man of many talents. Olympic gold (and silver) medalist, Attorney, Founder of a clothing company (Frank Shorter Sports), Founder of the Bolder Boulder (one of the biggest 50,000+ runner events in the world), Founder of the Frank Shorter RACE4Kids, Author, Commentator.

We sat in Erin Carson’s office at RallySport for an hour while I picked his brain on many topics. Today you’ll hear his thoughts on the following:

  • 0019aec979f7dad5312e6703bf62cb30How running slowly is the most important way to run faster
  • Technology is great, but you can learn to run on feel just as powerfully
  • His 1972 experience at the Munich Olympics – sleeping on the balcony when the terrorist shots were fired
  • His relationship with Steve Prefontaine
  • Running as stress relief and coping – from many things including a horrifically abusive childhood
  • How other countries have systematically forced performance-enhancing drugs on their athletes as far back as 1976 or earlier – affecting his Olympic experience when he won the silver medal when the gold medalist was later identified on a drug list for his country
  • How Frank got into running because he wanted to be a downhill skier
  • Why “just wanting to find out how good you could get” can be the most powerful driver
  • When past your prime, the goal is to slow down as slowly as possible and find different ways to satisfy the exercise “urge”
  • Frank’s “Run This World” nugget: The fear of anticipation is always worse than your actual reality.

frankshorterjul500x310That was a deep and diverse episode with Frank. If you want to read more about him, check out his new book My Marathon: Reflections on a Gold Medal Life. Look here for info about the Frank Shorter RACE4Kids which has a goal to help children lead happy and healthy lives.
